egypt
I can say with complete certainty that Egypt gave us the greatest culture shock of our lives. Stepping out onto the narrow, dirty streets of Cairo throws you head-first into a modern Muslim culture that is very safe, and yet unbelievably intimidating. Let’s just say that Egyptian men have no qualms about shouting at close range, and staring intently at foreigners may as well be a national pastime. (along with smoking sheesha)
However ancient Egypt still managed to marvel and amaze, despite the rampant corruption and offers to desecrate priceless antiquities in return for a little baksheesh.
The Great Pyramids of Giza are just that; a truly breathtaking sight that lives up to any and all hype. The Nile, while a bit dirty, is just as relaxing on a sunny afternoon as it was thousands of years ago sitting aboard a wooden Felucca.
As for that list of once-in-a-lifetime things people should experience before they die - riding a camel in the Sahara desert at sunset - check.
